Breathing in Confinement – Mohammad Jarrahi, labor activist and former political prisoner passed away some hours ago.

According to the reports obtained by “Breathing in Confinement,” the 59-year-old member of the Committee to Follow-up Establishing Workers’ Organizations, passed away in “Martyrs Hospital of Tajrish” in Tehran, today, October 5th after one year of severe illness.

Mohammad Jarrahi had been taken to the ICU of the same hospital after his condition had deteriorated yesterday.

The labor activist had been released from Tabriz Central Prison on August 9, 2016 and after serving 5 years.

Mohammad Jarrahi had been arrested along with Shahrokh Zamani in Tabriz on June 8, 2011 and then sentenced to 5 years in prison on charge of Committing Crimes against the National Security by the 1st branch of the Revolutionary Court of Tabriz.

After being released on the bail, he was arrested again in January 2012 to serve his term.

The labor activist suffered from larynx cancer, diabetes and blood fat in the prison but never received the necessary medical treatment.

In a letter to the Head of the Building Painters’ Syndicate of Iran on September 16, 2013 he wrote: “Because of my age (55 years old) and the Inappropriate condition of Central Prison of Tabriz regarding health and diet, I have got illnesses such as thyroid cancer, diabetes and blood fat. But unfortunately the authorities of the prison have done nothing for the treatment of these illnesses so far. I have already had one surgery for thyroid cancer and the doctors believe that I should be treated outside the prison. Therefore I completed my medical case and sent it to the forensics to get their opinion on my disability of serving imprisonment but after 5 months I have received no answer yet.”

Mohammad Jarrahi was not sent to medical furlough even for once during his 5 years in Tabriz Prison.

In another letter to the workers’ organizations and unions across the world, he had explained his situation and stated that: “the prison authorities are paving the way towards my death.”

It should be mentioned that Shahrokh Zamani, a labor activist who had been arrested along with Mohammad Jarrahi in one case also passed away suddenly in Rajai Shahr Prison of Karaj and after serving 4 years on September 13, 2015.
