Prisoner Executed in Khorramabad Prison

Breathing in Confinement, Thursday, 16 July 2026: The death sentence of at least one prisoner, who had previously been arrested on charges related to drug offences and sentenced to death, was carried out in Khorramabad Prison.
According to reporters from Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, one prisoner was hanged at dawn on Thursday, 16 July. The prisoner has been identified by Breathing in Confinement as Alireza Barani.
According to the report, Alireza Barani, 30, from Aligudarz, had previously been arrested in the same case as Mehdi Shahrisvand on charges related to drug offences and sentenced to death. The two prisoners, along with another prisoner sentenced to death, were transferred to solitary confinement on Tuesday, 14 July, in preparation for the implementation of their sentences.
Mehdi Shahrisvand’s death sentence was carried out on Wednesday, 15 July. Breathing in Confinement reported his execution yesterday. However, for unknown reasons, the executions of the other two prisoners were postponed.
Ultimately, at dawn on Thursday, 16 July 2026, Alireza Barani’s death sentence was carried out in Khorramabad Prison. No information is currently available regarding the status of the third prisoner.

Annual report on executions in Iran
According to the annual report of the Statistical Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, between March 2025 and March 2026, at least 2,616 individuals were executed in Iran. Of these, 12 executions were carried out in public. The executed individuals included 67 women and 8 juvenile offenders.
