Breathing in Confinement, Thursday, 1 October 2026: The death sentences of at least seven prisoners, including a woman and a man who was under the age of 18 at the time of his alleged offence, were carried out in Isfahan Prison, Sepidar Prison in Ahvaz, and Qezel Hesar Prison. The prisoners had previously been sentenced to death in separate cases on murder charges.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least seven prisoners have been executed in recent days in Isfahan Prison, Sepidar Prison in Ahvaz, and Qezel Hesar Prison. Two of the prisoners have been identified as Mahrokh Mirzaei and Omid Moradi.
According to information received, Mahrokh Mirzaei, 30, originally from Khomeyni Shahr and a resident of Isfahan, was arrested approximately three years ago on a charge of murdering her husband and was subsequently sentenced to death by the judiciary. Her death sentence was carried out at dawn on Monday, 28 September in Isfahan Prison.
On the same day, two other prisoners, Mohammadreza Sheikhi and Abdolghani Salarzehi, were also executed in Isfahan Prison. Breathing in Confinement had previously reported on the execution of these two prisoners.
Omid Moradi, 37, from Izeh, who was only 16 years old at the time of the alleged murder, was executed on Sunday, 24 May in Sepidar Prison in Ahvaz. He had been arrested approximately 21 years earlier, at the age of 16, on a murder charge and subsequently sentenced to death.
According to published information, Moradi had taken responsibility for the killing on the advice of his friend, who had committed the murder, because Moradi was a minor at the time, with the intention of absolving his friend of criminal responsibility. Despite his initial confession, Omid Moradi denied the murder charge throughout all stages of the judicial proceedings. His death sentence was carried out on Sunday, 24 May in Sepidar Prison in Ahvaz.
The execution of Omid Moradi, who was under the age of 18 at the time of the alleged offence, once again highlights the violation of the absolute prohibition on imposing and carrying out the death penalty for offences committed during childhood. Under Article 37 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, capital punishment may not be imposed for offences committed by persons below the age of 18. The Islamic Republic of Iran is also a party to the Convention and is bound by its provisions.
In a continuation of these executions, five other prisoners who had previously been sentenced to death on murder charges were executed in Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj on Wednesday, 30 September. News of the executions was reported by the state-affiliated Javan Online newspaper.
According to the report, one of the prisoners had assaulted his wife following a dispute between them. When his wife’s parents subsequently went to their home to follow up on the incident, the man killed both of them.
In another case, a prisoner had been sentenced to death for allegedly shooting and killing a man in March 2024. In his defence, he claimed that the victim had been harassing his sister.
Two other prisoners, tried in a joint case, had been sentenced to death for the murder of an elderly man during a robbery in 2020. According to the published report, the two men entered the victim’s home during the robbery and killed him.
In the fifth case, a prisoner was arrested and sentenced to death for the murder of a young woman in 2019. According to Javan Online, following the killing, he and another individual transported the woman’s body to the deserts around Robat Karim, where they set it on fire.
The report concerning the execution of the five prisoners in Qezel Hesar Prison did not disclose their identities or other personal details.
