Breathing in Confinement, Thursday, 1 October 2026: The death sentence of an Afghan national who had previously been arrested on an “espionage” charge and sentenced to death was secretly carried out in Karaj Central Penitentiary.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the death sentence of Torat Mohammadi, a 42-year-old Afghan national, was carried out at dawn on Wednesday, 30 September in Karaj Central Penitentiary.

According to published information, Torat Mohammadi, originally from Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, and a resident of Qom, was a father of four and a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He was arrested approximately two years ago on an “espionage” charge and was held for seven months in an IRGC security detention facility, where he was subjected to interrogation and pressure. He was ultimately sentenced to death by the judiciary.

Reports indicate that Mohammadi was denied the right to a lawyer of his own choosing during the proceedings. In addition, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, his execution was carried out secretly and without prior notification to his family or lawyer.

The secret execution of a death sentence, coupled with the failure to notify a prisoner’s family and lawyer in advance of the execution date, heightens concerns over respect for the fundamental rights of defendants and prisoners, including the right to a fair trial and the right of families to be informed about the fate of their loved ones.
