Breathing in Confinement – Thursday, October 29, 2026: The death sentence of Mohammad Naderi, a prisoner held at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj who was arrested amid military developments related to the war, has been upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court. He had previously been sentenced to death on charges of “espionage” by Branch 23 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Taghizadeh.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of Prisoners’ Rights in Iran, Mohammad Naderi, 45, from Tehran, was arrested by security forces in Tehran on March 17 and transferred to Greater Tehran Prison. In October, he was transferred to Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj, where he is currently being held in Ward 3, Hall 37.

According to published information, the use of Starlink satellite internet, taking photographs of certain locations, and sending images to media outlets outside Iran were among the activities cited in his case as grounds for the “espionage” charge.

Sources close to Naderi’s family have reported that the court proceedings lasted only approximately 20 minutes and that the hearings were conducted without observing minimum legal standards. According to these sources, the evidence relied upon by the court also lacked sufficient transparency.

The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold his death sentence comes amid published reports concerning the handling of his case, raising serious concerns about the right to defence, transparency of judicial proceedings, and fundamental guarantees of a fair trial.
