New Prison Sentence Imposed on Political Prisoner Yoroush Mehralibeyglu in Tabriz Prison

Breathing in Confinement, Wednesday, 29 July 2026: Yoroush Mehralibeyglu, a Turkish (Azerbaijani) activist and political prisoner held in Tabriz Prison, has been sentenced to more than three years in prison in a new case brought against him while he was incarcerated.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the sentence was issued by Branch 1 of the Tabriz Revolutionary Court and was communicated to him in prison two days ago. Under the ruling, Yoroush Mehralibeyglu was sentenced to three years and one day in prison on the charge of “inciting or provoking people to war and killing” and to seven months and 16 days in prison on the charge of “propaganda against the state.”

The new case against the political prisoner was opened following his re-arrest on 5 January this year.

Mehralibeyglu had previously received lengthy prison sentences in another part of his judicial case. In May, the East Azerbaijan Provincial Court of Appeal sentenced him to six years and two months in prison on the charge of “forming an illegal group” and three years and seven months on the charge of “assembly and collusion against national security.” The case is currently under review by the Supreme Court.

The Turkish activist has previously been arrested and convicted in connection with his activities. In November 2023, he was arrested in Jolfa County and transferred to the Tabriz Intelligence Department detention facility. He was subsequently transferred to Tabriz Prison. In February of the following year, he was temporarily released on bail.

Yoroush Mehralibeyglu also appeared before the Tabriz Revolutionary Court in June last year for hearings concerning the charges against him.
