Atena (Fatemeh) Daemi was arrested on 21 October 2014 and released in early 2016 on bail until the end of the judicial process. During this period, on 15 May 2015, she was sentenced by Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Mohammad Moghiseh, to 14 years in prison on charges of “assembly and collusion against national security, propaganda against the system, and insulting the leader.” Her sentence was reduced to 7 years by the Court of Appeal, and ultimately, with the application of Article 134, 5 years of it became enforceable.
This political prisoner began serving her sentence after being re-arrested at her home in late 2016. In 2018, while serving her sentence in the women’s ward of Evin prison, she faced a new case together with Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee, and was ultimately sentenced by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court to 3 years and 7 months’ discretionary imprisonment. The court also sentenced each of the two to a 2-year ban on membership in groups and parties. This sentence was later upheld on appeal without a hearing. Applying Article 134, 2 years and 1 month is enforceable for each of them.
On 1 July 2020, in a new case opened against her during her imprisonment, Atena Daemi was sentenced by Branch 24 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court to 2 years’ discretionary imprisonment and 74 lashes.
During this imprisonment, Ms. Daemi was exiled, together with Golrokh (Golrou), to Qarchak Varamin prison; through a hunger strike and pressure from human rights activists, they were returned to Evin prison.
She is currently held in the women’s political ward of Evin prison.
