Breathing in Confinement: Amirhossein Rezaei, a political science student at the University of Tehran and a journalist, has been arrested.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Amirhossein Rezaei was arrested on 6 May following a raid by security forces on his home in the city of Arak.

According to the published information, security agents entered his residence without presenting a judicial warrant, searched the home, and confiscated a number of his personal belongings, electronic devices, and books. Following his arrest, Mr Rezaei was transferred to an undisclosed location, and at the time of writing, no official information regarding his whereabouts, physical condition, or legal status has been made available. This situation constitutes enforced disappearance and a violation of the right to access legal counsel and for the family to be informed of the detainee’s fate.

The arrest comes amid growing reports of an intensifying security atmosphere in the country. Simultaneously with rising regional tensions and statements by some officials referring to a “wartime posture,” signs of increasing pressure on political and civil activists, as well as students, have emerged. In this context, reports have also indicated a rise in arbitrary arrests, an escalation in the issuance and implementation of death sentences, and the imposition of widespread and prolonged restrictions on internet access.
