Breathing in Confinement – Amid the continued wave of widespread arrests following the violent crackdown on the nationwide protests of January 2026, Somayeh Heydari, 23 years old and a physics student at Tabriz University, has been arrested by security forces in the city.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Somayeh Heydari—an active student at Tabriz University and a member of the editorial board of the student publication “Yol”—was arrested on the morning of 2 February 2026 following a raid by security forces on her home.

Based on information received, security agents conducted a search of her residence without presenting a judicial warrant and confiscated her laptop and mobile phone. As of the time of publication, no official information has been made available regarding the reasons for her arrest, the charges against her, the judicial authority handling the case, or her place of detention.

The lack of information provided to her family regarding her status and place of detention has heightened concerns about the possibility of arbitrary detention, denial of access to legal counsel, and violations of her fundamental rights—practices that are considered contrary to the principles of a fair trial and the international human rights obligations of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
