Breathing in Confinement – Behnaz Mahjoubi, sister of the late Behnam Mahjoubi, a Gonabadi dervish, has been arrested in Kerman.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Behnaz Mahjoubi — a justice-seeking activist and sister of Gonabadi dervish Behnam Mahjoubi — was arrested by security forces on the morning of Saturday, 28 June 2025, at her workplace in Kerman and transferred to an unknown location. As of now, no information is available regarding the reason for her arrest or the charges against her.

Her brother, Behnam Mahjoubi, was arrested in 2017 following his participation in the protest of Gonabadi dervishes on Golestan-e Haftom Street and was sentenced to prison by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. While in prison, he repeatedly raised concerns about his health and lack of access to medical care. In an audio recording from prison, he stated: “I’ve come to believe they intend to kill me.” Behnam Mahjoubi died in 2020 after months of psychological and physical pressure and three days in a coma.

Over the past few years, Behnaz Mahjoubi had been actively pursuing justice for her brother’s case. According to her mother, Behnaz suffers from a heart condition, and responsibility for her life and well-being lies with the security and judicial authorities.
