Breathing in Confinement – Dr Shamsi Abbasalizadeh, a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology, sustained a traumatic brain injury as a result of severe beating during her arrest for participating in popular protests in Tabriz, and was subsequently hospitalised at Mahalati Hospital.

Dr Abbasalizadeh is a well-known and widely respected physician in Tabriz, who has devoted much of her professional life to academic and educational activities. She previously served as the head of Al-Zahra Hospital and as a member of the academic faculty at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. She was also among the university’s teaching staff. Dr Shamsi had been arrested during the 2022 protests as well, and following her participation in student protests in response to the killing of Aylār Haqqi, she was suspended from all educational and clinical activities by security forces.
