Breathing in Confinement – A German national has been arrested in Iran on charges of espionage.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, citing Mehr News Agency, a German cyclist named Mark Kaufmann has been detained in Markazi Province. Iranian security authorities have accused him of engaging in espionage.
Reports state that during his travels, Kaufmann entered areas described as “restricted,” including locations near military facilities, an airport, a missile site, and air defence systems, where he allegedly took photographs, recorded GPS locations, and transmitted the information to another individual.
The arrest of this tourist may reflect the Islamic Republic’s use of “hostage diplomacy” — a policy seen in previous cases where foreign nationals have been detained as a means of exerting pressure on foreign governments. Such actions are often aimed at gaining political leverage or compelling specific actions, particularly during periods of heightened regional conflict or diplomatic tension.
Given Germany’s support for Israel during the recent military escalation between Iran and Israel, the detention of this German citizen could be interpreted as part of Tehran’s broader strategy to pressure Berlin. The often implicit conditions for releasing such detainees, or the negotiations surrounding them, frequently reveal the underlying political motives behind these arrests.
