Breathing in Confinement: Rouhollah Karki, a political prisoner held in Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz, has been sentenced to death by judicial authorities on charges including “publishing and disclosing classified documents” and “cooperation with the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organisation (MEK).”

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Rouhollah Karki, who is also considered one of the justice-seeking family members, was tried by the judiciary in Ahvaz and, according to the issued verdict, sentenced to death on charges including “publishing and disclosing classified documents,” “cooperation with the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organisation,” “insulting the sanctities of the system,” and “acting against national security.”

According to the report, the handling of his case has been accompanied by serious concerns regarding compliance with the principles of fair trial, including access to independent legal representation, transparency of the interrogation process, and the manner in which confessions were obtained.

Rouhollah Karki was arrested on Tuesday, 5 August 2025, by security forces in the city of Andimeshk and, after undergoing interrogation procedures, was transferred to Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz on 2 October of the same year.

Reports indicate that the legal situation and detention conditions of this political prisoner have raised concerns among human rights organisations, and calls have been made to halt the execution of the sentence and to re-examine the case in accordance with fair trial standards.
