Breathing in Confinement: The death sentence of at least one prisoner, who had previously been arrested and sentenced to death on charges of murder, has been carried out in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, in the early hours of Tuesday, 26 May 2026, a prisoner was hanged in Mashhad Prison. The identity of the prisoner has been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement as Azad Shoushtari.

According to the report, Azad Shoushtari had previously been arrested on charges of murder and, following judicial proceedings, was sentenced to death by the court. According to information received, the victim’s family had demanded 6 billion tomans in blood money (diyeh) in exchange for granting forgiveness. Despite efforts made on his behalf, only 4 billion tomans of the required amount was raised.

Azad Shoushtari was transferred to solitary confinement on Monday, 25 May 2026, in preparation for the implementation of the sentence. His execution was carried out in the early hours of Tuesday, 26 May 2026, at Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad.

Annual report on executions in Iran
According to the annual report of the Statistical Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, between March 2025 and March 2026, at least 2,616 individuals were executed in Iran. Of these, 12 executions were carried out in public. The executed individuals included 67 women and 8 juvenile offenders.
