Breathing in Confinement: On the verge of the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death and the onset of the 2022 uprising in September, the authorities of the Islamic Republic have intensified their widespread crackdown. The detention of political and social activists, including relatives of those killed during the nationwide uprising, has significantly escalated. In the past month, at least 257 citizens were detained. Mashallah Karami, the father of Mohammad Mehdi Karami, one of the uprising’s detainees who was executed last year, is among those detained. Furthermore, 17 former political prisoners were transferred to prison to serve their sentences.
Forty-six citizens were also sentenced to a total of 264 years, 4 months, and 9 days of imprisonment.
One of the tools the government has consistently used to create fear and terror is execution. The execution machine of the Islamic Republic took the lives of at least 72 prisoners in August 2022. In the same month, at least 11 death sentences were issued for various charges against prisoners.
Another inhumane practice of the judiciary of the Islamic Republic is the issuance and implementation of flogging sentences. In the past month, sentences for at least 376 lashes were issued against 4 defendants.
Due to the lack of safety measures, in August, at least 37 workers lost their lives in workplace accidents, and 62 workers were injured.
On the other hand, due to dire economic conditions, inflation, and the rising cost of living, protests by various segments of society continued in different cities. In the past month, at least 352 protests were held by various groups in society. Despite all economic hardships, over a thousand workers were fired in the past month.
Execution in August 2023:
In the past month, at least 72 prisoners were hanged in various prisons across the country. Among those executed were two juveniles named Abdolsamad Shahouzehi and Mahmoud Rigi, who were executed at the age of 28 after spending 12 years in prison.
Among the executed prisoners, 50 were executed on charges related to drugs, 14 for murder, 1 for armed robbery, and 6 for rape. The charge against one of the executed prisoners is yet to be known.
The authorities of the Islamic Republic continue to conceal the statistics of executions. In the past month, out of 72 executions recorded by the “Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League of Iran,” only 9 were officially announced by the state media.
From the beginning of the year 1402 (March 2023) until the end of August, six prisoners were hanged in public, and six women prisoners were executed.
