Breathing in Confinement: At dawn on Wednesday, 6 November 2024, the execution of at least 10 prisoners sentenced to death on charges related to “drug offenses,” “murder,” and “rape” was carried out in Qezel Hesar Prison, Karaj.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 10 prisoners were executed in Qezel Hesar Prison on Wednesday, 6 November 2024.
The identities of these prisoners have been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement as Jalil Eghbalzadeh, Mostafa Sarlak, Faramarz Entesari, Mohammad Hossein Bayat, Abdollah Garavand, Hossein Aghasi, Ajmal Azizi, Mohammad Tajik, and a prisoner named Sadegh. The identity of another prisoner, an Afghan national, is under review.
Jalil Eghbalzadeh, son of Fereydoun, was from the village of Mal Amiri in Sahneh County; Faramarz Entesari was from Nourabad; Abdollah Garavand was sentenced for drug-related charges; Mostafa Sarlak, son of Mohammad, was from the Bakhtiari community in Isfahan and resided in Pakdasht; Hossein Aghasi and Mohammad Hossein Bayat were sentenced for “murder,” as were four Afghan nationals, including Ajmal Azizi and one unidentified prisoner. Mohammad Tajik was sentenced for rape, and Sadegh was sentenced on both rape and drug-related charges. All had previously been tried and sentenced to death.
It is also reported that since Saturday, at least 12 prisoners sentenced to death had been transferred to solitary confinement, two of whom—charged with murder and whose names have been withheld—were released after obtaining clemency. The remaining sentences were carried out at dawn on Wednesday, 6 November, in Qezel Hesar Prison, Karaj.

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
