Breathing in Confinement – A prisoner who had been arrested around twenty years ago on the charge of “theft” and sentenced to imprisonment has died in Kermanshah Prison as a result of inadequate access to medical care.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Saturday, 29 November 2025, a prisoner died in Kermanshah Prison due to delayed medical attention. The identity of the prisoner, Nader Jameh-Shorani, has been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement.

Nader Jameh-Shorani, son of Moradali, from the village of Jameh-Shoran in Kermanshah Province, suffered a stroke after enduring two decades of imprisonment. However, according to reports, prison authorities delayed his transfer to a medical facility and failed to provide necessary medical care in time. Their late and insufficient action proved ineffective, and he passed away.

Under international human-rights standards, including the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (the Nelson Mandela Rules), states are obligated to ensure the health, safety, and dignity of prisoners.
The direct responsibility for safeguarding the lives and wellbeing of individuals in custody lies with prison authorities and relevant institutions. Failure to provide adequate medical services can constitute negligence leading to death and represents a serious violation of the fundamental rights of prisoners.

The death of Nader Jameh-Shorani is yet another example of the frequently recurring pattern of prisoners being denied their right to medical treatment in Iranian prisons — a violation that may carry criminal, administrative, and international accountability consequences for the responsible officials.
