Death Toll from Executions in Birjand Prison Rises

Breathing in Confinement: The death sentences of at least three prisoners, who had previously been arrested and sentenced to death on drug-related charges, have been carried out in Birjand Prison.
According to reporters of Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, three prisoners were hanged in Birjand Prison in the early hours of Sunday, 14 June. The identities of the prisoners have been confirmed as Ali Asghar Amini Pour, Mohammadamin Narouei, and Bilal Saadat Jahani (Gorgij). Breathing in Confinement had previously reported the executions of the latter two prisoners.
According to the report, Ali Asghar Amini Pour, aged 48 and the father of three children, had been arrested three years earlier on drug-related charges and sentenced to death. According to a source close to him, he had memorised the entire Qur’an and had observed continuous fasting until five months before his execution. He was hanged at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, 14 June 2026. Despite suffering a broken neck, he remained suspended from the gallows for 45 minutes. His execution was reportedly carried out in secret, without prior notification to his family and without being granted a final family visit.
Bilal Saadat Jahani (Gorgij), aged 35 and the father of three children from the village of Allahabad in Azadshahr, had also been arrested three years earlier on drug-related charges and sentenced to death. Mohammadamin Narouei, aged 57 and the father of three children, had been arrested four years earlier on similar charges and likewise sentenced to death.
According to the report, these two prisoners were also denied the right to a final visit with their families before their executions, and their families were not informed that the sentences were about to be carried out. The executions were implemented in the early hours of the same day in Birjand Prison.

Annual report on executions in Iran
According to the annual report of the Statistical Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, between March 2025 and March 2026, at least 2,616 individuals were executed in Iran. Of these, 12 executions were carried out in public. The executed individuals included 67 women and 8 juvenile offenders.
