Breathing in Confinement: At dawn on Saturday, October 19, 2024, the execution of at least one prisoner convicted of “murder” was carried out in Rasht Prison.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news agency of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, a prisoner was executed at dawn on Saturday, October 19, 2024, in Lakan Prison in Rasht. The identity of the prisoner, Javad Reza Abbasi, has been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement.

According to a report from Breathing in Confinement, Reza Abbasi, a resident of Tarom and living in Rasht, was attacked by a group in Rudbar, Rasht, and acted in self-defense. During the confrontation, one of the attackers was killed. Despite significant efforts by Mr. Abbasi’s family to obtain a pardon from the victim’s family, the issued sentence was carried out at dawn on Saturday, October 19, in the yard of Rasht Prison.

As of the time of this report, the execution of this prisoner has not been announced by official resources.

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
