Breathing in Confinement: At dawn on Thursday, September 26, 2024, the execution of a prisoner convicted of “murder” was carried out in Isfahan Central Prison.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, a prisoner was executed in Isfahan prison at dawn on Thursday, September 26, 2024. This prisoner had been in prison for 8 years on a murder charge. The identity of the prisoner has been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement as Mahmoud Ataei, a resident of the village of Neko Abad, Mobarakeh.
According to an informed source cited by Breathing in Confinement, Mahmoud Ataei was executed at 5 a.m. on Thursday in Isfahan. The source further added: “Mahmoud was arrested in 2017 on charges of murder, and yesterday was the last deadline to obtain the victim’s family’s consent. Yesterday afternoon, at 4 p.m., a group of friends and benefactors visited the victim’s family to seek their pardon but were unsuccessful in securing it. The sentence was carried out yesterday.”
Mahmoud Ataei was buried at 11 a.m. on September 26 in Golestan Shohada, Neko Abad.

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
