Breathing in Confinement – The death sentence of at least one prisoner who had previously been arrested on charges of “murder” and sentenced to execution has been carried out in Shiraz Prison.
According to information received by reporters from Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, in the early hours of Sunday, 15 February 2026, a prisoner in Shiraz Prison was hanged. The identity of the prisoner has been verified by Breathing in Confinement as Asghar Esmaili. The day prior, Breathing in Confinement had reported the transfer of a prisoner to solitary confinement in Shiraz Prison.
Asghar Esmaili, a 37-year-old man from Shiraz, had previously been arrested on charges of “murder” and sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out in the early morning hours of Sunday, 15 February 2026, in Shiraz Prison.
Annual Report on Executions in Iran
According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, six people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
