Breathing in Confinement: At dawn on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, the death sentences of at least 9 prisoners, including a woman who had been arrested on charges of “murder” and drug-related offenses, were carried out in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj.

According to Breathing in Confinement,  the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 9 prisoners, accused of “murder” and drug-related charges, were executed at dawn on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj.

The identities of the prisoners include Iraj Ahadi, Ahmad Alizadeh, Saman Bozorgi, an unidentified woman, Mohsen Moradi, Jafar Rastgar, Hamzeh Torkashvand, Khaled Tajik (an Afghan national), and Jafar Rahsepar.

Iraj Ahadi, Mohsen Moradi, Ahmad Alizadeh, Saman Bozorgi, and a female prisoner had been arrested on charges of “murder” and were sentenced to death. Iraj Ahadi had been in detention under a death sentence for the past 8 years.

Ahmad Alizadeh’s execution was carried out for the second time, despite initial consent from the victim’s family to halt the execution during the first attempt two months ago. He had been on the gallows for 28 seconds before being taken down and revived after the family’s intervention. Breathing in Confinement, published a full report on Ahmad Alizadeh’s execution. Mohsen Moradi, Jafar Rastgar, Hamzeh Tarkashvand, Khaled Tajik, and Jafar Rahsepar had previously been arrested on drug-related charges and were sentenced to death.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
