Breathing in Confinement – At dawn on Wednesday, February 28, 2025, the execution of at least five prisoners, who had been arrested and sentenced to death on murder and drug-related charges, was carried out in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, five prisoners were executed in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj, on Wednesday morning, February 28, 2025. The identities of the executed prisoners, Bahman Houshmand, Alireza Basatiniya, Sajad Eghbali, and Mosib Azizi, have been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement. The execution of a fifth prisoner, whose identity remains unknown, was announced by the Judiciary’s media outlet.
Based on reports received by Breathing in Confinement, Bahman Houshmand, known as Sookhteh, was from Hamadan and was held in Unit 3 of Ghezel Hesar Prison. He had previously been arrested on murder charges and sentenced to death. Alireza Basatiniya, from Ilam, Sajad Eghbali, from Kuhdasht, and Mosib Azizi, from Arak, were also executed on murder charges. The fifth prisoner, according to Mizan News Agency, had been sentenced to death for armed robbery, but their identity was not disclosed.
Breathing in Confinement previously reported that seven prisoners had been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for execution. The execution of the sixth prisoner, Bahram Hedavand Khani, was postponed, and he was granted a respite. The seventh prisoner, Amir Nazariyani, was spared from execution after receiving a pardon from the victim’s family.
The sentences were carried out at dawn on Wednesday, February 28, in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj.
