Breathing in Confinement – The death sentence of at least one prisoner who had been arrested on charges related to “drug offences” and sentenced to death was carried out in Mashhad Prison.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on the morning of Thursday, 18 September 2025, a prisoner was hanged in Mashhad Prison. The identity of this prisoner, “Javad Afaq,” has been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement.

Javad Afaq, 36 years old, from the village of Khaleqabad, had previously been arrested on charges related to “drug offences” and sentenced to death. His brother, Jalal Afaq, was also executed a few months earlier on the same charge. The sentence was carried out at dawn on Thursday, 18 September 2025, in Mashhad Prison.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, six people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
