Breathing in Confinement – At dawn on Monday, 9 June 2025, the death sentences of at least two prisoners previously convicted of drug-related charges were carried out at Karaj Central Prison.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the two inmates, identified as Karim Hemmati and Yaghoub Yari, were executed early this morning at Karaj Central Prison.

Karim Hemmati, 30, from Nourabad in Lorestan province, and Yaghoub Yari, 30, originally from Kuhdasht and residing in Karaj, had both been arrested and sentenced to death for drug-related offences.

On Saturday, 7 June, Breathing in Confinement had reported the transfer of three death row inmates to solitary confinement in preparation for execution at Karaj Central Prison. Of those three, the execution of Kiumars Bahrami was halted and he was returned to the general ward.

The executions of Hemmati and Yari were carried out at dawn on Monday, 9 June 2025.

As of the time of this report, the execution of these prisoners has not been announced by official resources.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, six people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
