Breathing in Confinement: At dawn on Sunday, January 5, the death sentences of at least four prisoners who had been arrested and convicted of “drug-related offenses” were carried out in Adelabad Prison, Shiraz.

 

According to “Breathing in Confinement,” the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on the morning of January 5, four prisoners were executed in Shiraz Prison on charges related to “drug offenses.” The identities of these prisoners have been confirmed as Khalil Alizahi (Sargalzahi), Sajjad Arzandeh, Mohammadreza Hosseinzadeh, and Amir Mohammad Farahani.

 

As reported by “Breathing in Confinement,” Khalil Alizahi (Sargalzahi), the 45-year-old son of Mohammad Omar and father of eight children, was arrested two years ago. Sajjad Arzandeh, aged 48, Mohammadreza Hosseinzadeh, aged 44, three years ago, and Amir Mohammad Farahani, previously, were all arrested in separate cases on charges of “drug-related offenses” and sentenced to death. The sentences were carried out at dawn on Sunday, January 5, in Adelabad Prison, Shiraz.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
