Breathing in Confinement – The death sentence of at least one prisoner convicted of murder has been carried out in Tabriz Central Prison.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, in the early hours of Monday, 4 August 2025, a prisoner was executed in Tabriz Prison. The identity of the executed prisoner – Matin Shahbazzadeh – has been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement.
Matin Shahbazzadeh, a 22-year-old from Tabriz, had been arrested 28 months ago on murder charges and subsequently sentenced to death. His execution was carried out on the morning of 4 August 2025 in Tabriz Prison.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran
According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, six people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
