At dawn on Wednesday, 14 May 2025, the death sentences of at least two prisoners convicted on charges related to “drug offences” and “murder” were carried out in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the identities of the two prisoners executed in the early hours of Wednesday, 14 May, in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj have been confirmed as Reza Miri and Gholam Abbas Cheraghian.

According to the report, Reza Miri, son of Mohammad and known as Haj Reza, was from Harsin. He had previously been arrested and sentenced to death for charges related to drug offences. He had been transferred to solitary confinement on Saturday, 10 May, in preparation for the execution.

Gholam Abbas Cheraghian, son of Mohammad Hossein, from Robat Karim, had previously been arrested and sentenced to death for the murder of Mosib Yousefi. His sentence was carried out at dawn on Wednesday, 14 May, in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, six people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
