Breathing in Confinement: At dawn on Sunday, January 26, 2025, the death sentences of at least three prisoners, who had been arrested and sentenced to execution on charges related to “drug offenses,” were carried out in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, three prisoners were executed at dawn on Sunday, January 26, on charges of “drug-related crimes” in Ghezel Hesar Prison. The identities of the executed individuals—Farzad Mirzaei, Samad Hashemi, and Farhad Fardini—have been verified by Breathing in Confinement.

Based on information from Breathing in Confinement’s reporter, Farzad Mirzaei, son of Khosrow and a resident of Harsin, was arrested eight years ago on drug-related charges and sentenced to death. Samad Hashemi, son of Mohammad Beg, and Farhad Fardini, son of Hojjat, both residents of Harsin, were previously arrested in a joint case on similar charges and sentenced to execution. The death sentences were carried out at dawn on Sunday, January 26, in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
