Breathing in confinement: At dawn on Wednesday, 11 December 2024, two prisoners who were previously arrested and sentenced to death for “murder” were executed in Miandoab Prison.
According to “Breathing in confinement,” the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the identities of the two prisoners, have been confirmed as Sajjad Azizzadeh and Ebrahim Valizadeh.
Based on the reporter of Breathing in confinement, Sajjad Azizzadeh, the son of Ghodrat and a resident of Nowruzlu, and Ebrahim Valizadeh, from Qajlu village, were involved in an incident seven years ago. After consuming alcohol with the victim, an altercation ensued, leading to the victim’s death. The two were jointly convicted of “murder” and sentenced to death. This occurred despite earlier reports suggesting the possibility of obtaining the victim’s family’s consent for their release. Nevertheless, their execution was carried out at dawn on 11 December.
It is worth noting that under Article 291 of the Islamic Penal Code, a murder committed in a state of intoxication might be considered an unintentional act and exempt from qisas (retribution). Witnesses in this case stated that the defendants’ intoxication was not intended for committing a crime, and their act was due to loss of control caused by alcohol, without prior intent.
