Breathing in Confinement – At dawn on Tuesday, 8 April 2025, the death sentences of at least five political-religious prisoners convicted of “rebellion” (baghi) were carried out in Vakilabad Prison, Mashhad.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the identities of the executed prisoners have been confirmed as Malek Ali Fadaei Nasab, Farhad Shakeri, Abdolhakim Azim Gorgij, Abdolrahman Gorgij, and Taj Mohammad Khormali.

The report states that all five had been convicted in a joint case on charges of “rebellion” (baghi) through alleged membership in the al-Furqan group and the Sunni Solidarity Front of Iran. They were sentenced to death by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Mashhad, presided over by Judge Mahmoud Davoodabadi. The sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court in August 2023.

Malek Fadaei Nasab was from Sabzevar and identified as Shia, while the other four – including Taj Mohammad Khormali, Farhad Shakeri, and Abdolhakim Azim Gorgij (from Aq Qala) – were Sunnis from Golestan Province.

These five prisoners were hanged at dawn without prior notice to their families and without the right to a final visit.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, five people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
