Breathing in Confinement – At dawn on Wednesday, 28 May 2025, the death sentences of at least four prisoners, previously arrested and convicted on drug-related charges, were carried out at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, four prisoners were hanged at Ghezel Hesar Prison early Wednesday morning. Their identities have been confirmed as Majid Bahrami, Seyed Abbas Laki Khosrokhani, Hojjat Havasigaravand, and Afshin Ezzati.
Majid Bahrami, also known as Majid Khalifeh, a resident of Shahr-e Rey, had previously been arrested and sentenced to death on charges related to drug offences. Seyed Abbas Laki Khosrokhani, from Nourabad, had likewise been arrested and sentenced to death on drug-related charges; he was transferred to solitary confinement the week prior to his execution, although the implementation of his sentence had been temporarily postponed. Hojjat Havasigaravand, a resident of Kuhdasht, had been sentenced to death in a separate case involving drug-related charges. Afshin Ezzati had also been arrested and sentenced to death for similar offences. All four death sentences were carried out at dawn on Wednesday, 28 May 2025, at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, six people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
