Breathing in Confinement – At dawn on Sunday, March 16, 2025, the death sentences of at least four prisoners convicted of “murder” were carried out in Urmia Central Prison (Darya).

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, four prisoners, including two women, were executed in Urmia Central Prison (Darya) on Sunday morning, March 16, 2025. The identities of these prisoners—Mojgan Azarpisheh, Kosar Baghernejad, Arshad Farzadband, and Hamed Faraji—have been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement.

As per the Breathing in Confinement sources, Arshad Farzadband, son of Ebrahim, a 28-year-old from Nari Margour village near Urmia, was arrested in 2019 on charges of murder and sentenced to death. Hamed Faraji, a 34-year-old from Urmia, was arrested in 2017 on murder charges and sentenced to death by the Urmia Criminal Court.

Additionally, according to Breathing in Confinement, citing the human rights organization Hengaw, Mojgan Azarpisheh, a 31-year-old from Urmia, was arrested six years ago for the alleged murder of a pregnant woman and sentenced to death. Another female prisoner, Kosar Baghernejad, a 24-year-old from Naqadeh, was arrested two years ago for allegedly murdering her husband and was sentenced to death.

The executions were carried out at dawn on Sunday, March 16, in Urmia Central Prison (Darya).

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
