Breathing in Confinement – The death sentences of at least two prisoners convicted on drug-related charges were carried out in Arak Prison.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on the morning of Sunday, 7 September 2025, two prisoners were hanged in Arak Prison. Their identities have been confirmed as Ahmad Rafiei and Abdolreza Karimi.

Ahmad Rafiei, from Arak, had previously been arrested and sentenced to death on drug-related charges. Abdolreza Karimi, son of Ezzatollah, also from Arak, had previously been arrested in a separate case on drug-related charges and sentenced to death. Breathing in Confinement had earlier reported the second executed prisoner’s name as Gholamreza, which is hereby corrected.

The sentences were carried out at dawn on Sunday, 7 September 2025, in Arak Prison.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, six people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
