Breathing in Confinement – At dawn on Thursday, 10 April 2025, the death sentence of at least one prisoner convicted of “murder” was carried out in Shahroud Prison.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, one prisoner was hanged early Thursday morning in Shahroud Prison. The identity of the executed prisoner has been confirmed by the Breathing in Confinement as Moein Ashrafi.

According to Breathing in Confinement, Moein Ashrafi, son of Javad, aged 32, was from the village of Qaleh Agha Abdollah in Bastam. He was arrested five years ago following a group altercation that resulted in a murder, and he was later sentenced to death. A reliable source stated that Ashrafi’s family had offered 3 billion tomans in exchange for the victim’s family’s consent to halt the execution. The victim’s widow reportedly expressed willingness to resolve the case for the sake of her children’s future. However, the victim’s family ultimately refused to grant forgiveness.

Moein Ashrafi had served as a ward representative in Shahroud Prison and was known for his charitable efforts and support for other inmates. His execution was carried out at dawn on Thursday, 10 April 2025, in Shahroud Prison.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, five people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
