Public Protests: Expansion of “No to Executions Tuesdays” Hunger Strike to 35 Prisons and Families’ Gathering Outside Evin Prison

Breathing in Confinement: On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at least 41 protests and demonstrations were held by the public and political prisoners.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the Statistical Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the hunger strike of political prisoners in 35 prisons across the country, known as “No to Executions Tuesdays,” has entered its 54th week. At the same time, a group of families of political prisoners sentenced to death gathered outside Evin Prison, demanding the revocation of their loved ones’ execution sentences.
This week, prisoners in the political ward of Gonbad-e Kavus Prison also joined the strike. Additionally, inmates in the “Misaq” ward of Lakan Prison in Rasht joined the nationwide political prisoners’ strike in protest against the death sentence issued for Manouchehr Fallah. In a statement, the striking prisoners declared:
“The ‘No to Executions’ campaign is becoming a collective action across Iran and is expanding every week.”
The hunger strike continues in the prisons of Greater Tehran Prison, Evin (Women’s Ward, Ward 4, Ward 6, Ward 8), Ghezel Hesar (Units 3 and 4), Karaj Central Prison, Khorramabad, Naqadeh, Khoy, Mashhad , Saqqez, Ardabil, Qaemshahr, Urmia, Marivan, Kamyaran, Baneh, Salmas, Shiraz, Rasht, Bam, Tabriz, Arak, Kahnuj, Asadabad, Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan, Tabas, Khurin Prison in Varamin, Roudsar, Ahvaz, Ramhormoz, Talesh, Adelabad Prison in Shiraz (both Women’s and Men’s Wards), Borazjan, and Jooyan Prison.
Expansion of Public Protests
Alongside the prison hunger strikes, widespread public protests took place across different parts of the country:
Tehran shopkeepers’ strike: Several shopkeepers in Molavi Street, South Khayyam Street, and Ghiam Square went on strike in protest against rising prices and the devaluation of the national currency.
Protest by workers at Kerman Wastewater Treatment Plant: Workers gathered to protest four months of unpaid wages.
Protest by workers at Fajr Jam Gas Refinery in Bushehr: Workers demonstrated against wage discrimination, demanding salary increases, a revised job classification plan, wage equalization, and the removal of salary caps. They chanted: “We demand fair wages without discrimination!”
Protest by workers at Karun Irrigation and Drainage Network Operation Company: Workers staged a protest demanding a change in their employment status.
The spread of these strikes and protests reflects widespread dissatisfaction with the country’s economic conditions.
