Breathing in Confinement: In the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 9, 2024, the execution sentences of at least 11 prisoners were carried out in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 11 prisoners were executed in Ghezel Hesar Prison on the morning of October 9, 2024. The identities of four of these prisoners, Mohammad Eshghi Zehi, Ahmad Naroui, Khosravi, and Kamran Saghaei, have been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement.

Mohammad Eshghi Zehi and Ahmad Naroui were Baluch citizens and cousins, both arrested and sentenced to death on drug-related charges. Mr. Khosravi, a citizen of Lor descent and son of Bawe Bag, was previously arrested and sentenced to death for murder. Kamran Saghaei, from Khorramabad also had been tried and sentenced to death for murder.

According to other reports, a woman and two additional men, identified as Arman Hedayati and Mehdi Zarei, were also executed in Ghezel Hesar Prison on the same day. Details regarding these executions are under investigation. As of the time of this writing, the execution of these prisoners have not been announced by official resources.

Additionally, the execution sentences of four other defendants were carried out on the same day in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj. According to Rokna News Agency, two men were executed for murder, and two Afghan nationals were executed for “rape.”

One of the men executed for murder killed his father during a family dispute in 2007. He initially intended to kill his 10-year-old niece to take revenge on his brother, but ultimately killed his father as well. After his trial and a period of respite granted by the victim’s family, his execution was carried out when he failed to secure their forgiveness.

The second individual had killed his neighbor in 2021 due to a personal dispute and burned the victim’s body. Despite efforts to obtain forgiveness from the victim’s family, his execution was also carried out.

Rokna further reported, without identifying the Afghan nationals, that they were sentenced to death for gang rape of a woman in western Tehran in 2019. The incident occurred when the woman went to visit a villa and was assaulted by seven Afghan men. Six of them were sentenced to death, with two executed last week and two more executed yesterday. The remaining two suspects are awaiting execution.

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
