Breathing in Confinement: On Saturday, 3rd August 2024, the execution of a prisoner convicted of “drug-related offenses” was carried out in Khorramabad Central Prison.

According to “Breathing in Confinement,” the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Saturday, 3rd August 2024, a prisoner was executed in Khorramabad Central Prison. The identity of this prisoner, Malek Ashtar, a 35-year-old from the Bakhtiari ethnic group and a resident of Dezful, was confirmed by “Breathing in Confinement.”

According to additional reports received by the “Breathing in Confinement” reporter, Malek Ashtar was the father of a 12-year-old daughter. He was previously held in Parsilon Prison but was transferred to Khorramabad Central Prison a few days prior to his execution for carrying out his sentence.

The prisoner’s family had staged a sit-in outside Khorramabad Central Prison for two days, but in the early hours of 3rd August, they were informed of Mr. Ashtar’s execution.

This prisoner was executed alongside another prisoner named Ahmad Touni.

As of the time of this report, the execution of this prisoner has not been announced by official sources.

According to the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 46 prisoners have been executed in various prisons over the past seven days. The Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, warning of a new and increasing wave of executions amid tensions with Israel, calls on international authorities to take decisive action to prevent further executions.

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
