Breathing in Confinement — At least five prisoners who had been convicted on charges including drug offences, murder, and rape were executed by hanging at Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj at dawn on Wednesday, 27 August 2025.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the identities of the executed have been verified as Kazem Fatemi, Hossein Biabani (from Kangavar), Ahmad-Ali Mehri (from Tazeh Abad, Kuhdasht), Hesam Mohammadi (murder), and Ahmad Yousefi (an Afghan national; rape).

The outlet reports that three other prisoners who had been transferred to solitary confinement for execution had their sentences haltedtwo were returned to the general ward last night and one earlier today. Breathing in Confinement also apologises for having previously named Hassan-Ali Yousefi; he was subsequently returned to the ward.

Case details indicate that Kazem Fatemi had been arrested for allegedly carrying 12 kg of methamphetamine (“shisheh”) and sentenced to death. Hossein Biabani and Ahmad-Ali Mehri had also been arrested and sentenced to death on drug-related charges. The executions were carried out at dawn on 27 August 2025.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, six people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
