Breathing in Confinement – On Wednesday, 16 April 2025, a political prisoner sentenced to death was transferred to solitary confinement in Urmia Prison in preparation for the execution of his sentence.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran: On Wednesday, 16 April 2025, political prisoner Hamid Hosseinnezhad Heydaranlou, who has been sentenced to death, was transferred to the quarantine ward of Urmia Prison for the execution of his sentence.

Hamid Hosseinnezhad Heydaranlou, a 39-year-old political prisoner, was arrested on 12 April 2024. He was tortured and forced to sign a pre-written confession, despite being illiterate. In July 2024, he was sentenced to death by Branch 1 of the Urmia Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Najafzadeh, on the charge of “rebellion” (baghi). His case is one among many in which defendants are sentenced to the irreversible punishment of death without due process, in the absence of legal counsel, and through an unfair trial—this, despite the existence of solid evidence such as a passport stamp proving he was abroad at the time of the alleged conflict. In its recent report, Amnesty International described the death penalty as “a tool used by the authorities to instil fear and consolidate power.”
