Breathing in Confinement – The death sentences of at least five prisoners convicted of drug-related offences were carried out at Karaj Central Prison.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, five prisoners were executed at dawn on 3 August 2025 in Karaj Central Prison. The identities of the prisoners – Meysam Joudaki, Reza Bakht Avar, Sajjad Pourdanesh, Fariborz Haghi, and Mohammad Gerousi – have been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement. The identities of two of these individuals had previously been reported. Earlier, Breathing in Confinement had reported the transfer of four prisoners to solitary confinement in preparation for execution. However, the executions of Ali Hosseinpour and Ali Eitavandi were halted and they were returned to the general ward.

According to this report, Fariborz Haghi, 28, son of Haghmorad, originally from Nurabad and residing in Kermanshah; Mohammad Gerousi (Golousi), from Sahneh; Meysam Joudaki and Reza Bakht Avar, both from Karaj; and Sajjad Pourdanesh, from Tehran, had previously been arrested in separate cases on drug-related charges and sentenced to death. Their executions were carried out in the early hours of Sunday, 3 August 2025, at Karaj Central Prison.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, six people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
