Breathing in Confinement: Leila Hosseinzadeh, a student union activist and former political prisoner, was sentenced by Branch 28 of Revolutionary Court in Tehran to five years in prison as well as two years of ban from social media activities.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Leila Hosseinzadeh, a student union activist and former political prisoner, was sentenced to prison by Tehran Revolutionary Court.

According to the verdict issued by Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, presided over by Judge Mohammad Reza Amouzad, Leila Hosseinzadeh was sentenced to five years in prison as well as two years of ban from social media activities on charge of “conspiracy to act against the security of the country.” The case was opened for Ms. Hosseinzadeh on the pretext of attending a gathering in front of Sharif University of Technology on the occasion of the Gonabadi dervish prisoner, Mohammad Sharifi Moghaddam’s birthday.

Confirming the news, Amir Raisian, Ms. Hosseinzadeh’s lawyer, wrote on his personal page: In her previous case, an appeal court was held in October 2018, when she was not found guilty. However, the case officer claimed that she had committed an anti-security act in the time period between her arrest and her hearing in appeal court!
Although this had nothing to do with the indictment, we asked them for evidence. In May 2019, the case officer provided pictures of my client’s presence on campus, one of which was at “birthday party.” And the appeal court ruled that the defendant had continued her acts between the indictment and the appeals court! In the new verdict, you can see that the date of incident is January 6, 2019.…
Now, a new sentence of 5 years imprisonment has been issued for my client, while the forensic doctor once confirmed that she, considering her severe illness, was unable to endure her prison sentence! “Even the fact that a sentence was once issued for ‘this crime’ and therefore, the case should be considered a closed case was overlooked.”

Leila Hosseinzadeh, a student at the University of Tehran, was arrested along with a number of other students during the protests on January 18, 2018, and was released on bail after 16 days on January 18. Once again on July 28, 2019, she was arrested by security agents at her home and after ten days of being held in one of the IRGC’s so called safe houses, she was transferred to the women’s ward of Evin Prison to serve her 2 years and 6 months sentence.

Leila Hosseinzadeh was sent on leave from the women’s ward of Evin Prison on March 11, 2020, and was finally released following a recent directive from the judiciary and considering her inability to serve her sentence.
