The Court of Appeal sentences Golrokh Iraei to five years in prison as well as additional punishments

Breathing in Confinement: Golrokh Iraei, a former political prisoner, was sentenced to five years in prison as well as additional punishments by Branch 36 of the Court of Appeal in Tehran Province.

She had previously been sentenced to seven years in prison and additional punishments in the court of first instance.

According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Golrokh Iraei, a former political prisoner, was sentenced to prison by the Court of Appeal in Tehran Province.

As per the ruling, issued recently by the branch 36 of the Court of Appeals in Tehran, headed by Abbas Ali Houzan and Khosro Khalili Mehdirji, Ms. Iraei has been sentenced to five years in prison for the charges of “gathering and collusion, propagandizing against the system, and disturbing public order”. She has also been banned from membership in parties and groups, from living in or going to Tehran, and from leaving the country for two years. In addition, her of mobile phone has also been confiscated.

Ms. Iraei’s appeal court was held on June 18, 2023, in abstentia. In October 2022, after being beaten, Golrokh Iraei was arrested by the security forces at her home in Tehran. She spent a long time in the detention centers of the Security Police, Shapur Police Station, and Qarchak Varamin Prison. Finally on November 29, 2022, she was transferred to the women’s ward of Evin Prison.

In April of this year, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court headed by Judge Iman Afshari, sentenced her to seven years in prison and two years of ban on leaving the country, ban on being in Tehran and ban on membership in parties and groups, and confiscation of her mobile phone.  Golrokh Iraei was arrested again only a few months after being released from prison during nationwide protests.
