Breathing in Confinement – The hunger strike of political prisoners participating in the “Tuesdays Against Execution” campaign has reached its 110th week in 56 prisons across Iran.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, amid the war that has been imposed on the Iranian people as a result of the regime’s misguided policies and at a time when the wave of executions is intensifying, political prisoners issued a statement in the 110th week of their hunger strike campaign from inside prisons, expressing solidarity and empathy with the people of Iran.
They described the death of Ali Khamenei as the beginning of the end of the system of Velayat-e Faqih and the opening of a path toward democratic transition, emphasising that Iran will never return to any form of dictatorship, whether past or present. In their statement, the political prisoners also referred to new death sentences issued against several prisoners and called for an immediate halt to executions, stressing that freedom and a bright future will only be achieved through the will, unity, and solidarity of the Iranian people—not through reliance on foreign forces.
Full text of the political prisoners’ statement:
“The ‘Tuesdays Against Execution’ campaign considers the death of Iran’s dictator Ali Khamenei, responsible for the killing and execution of tens of thousands of Iranian people, as the beginning of the end of the abhorrent system of Velayat-e Faqih and the gateway to democracy.
Under the current harsh wartime conditions that this authoritarian system has imposed on our country, we prisoners stand alongside the people and share in their suffering and hardships.
We believe that despite all the ups and downs, Iran is ultimately moving toward a bright future and will never return to the past or to systems of dictatorship. Iran’s freedom will be achieved by its own people, through their unity and solidarity—not through foreign forces.
The number of executions in the past two weeks has exceeded 65 people. In recent days, the death sentence of another detainee from the January 2026 uprising, Mohammadreza Majidi Asl, was issued in Tehran on the charge of “enmity against God” (moharebeh). Two Kurdish prisoners, Mohammad Faraji and Raouf Sheikh Maroufi, detained during the 2022 uprising, have also been sentenced to death.
The death sentence of another political prisoner, Peyman Farahavar, imprisoned in Lakan Prison in Rasht, has been upheld for the second time by the regime’s Supreme Court, placing his life in greater danger than ever before. At the same time, many other detainees remain under pressure and torture and face the risk of receiving inhumane death sentences or heavy punishments.
The ‘Tuesdays Against Execution’ campaign once again calls the attention of the international community and human rights organisations to the situation of prisoners—particularly political prisoners sentenced to death—and demands their release. The disgraceful and crime-filled record of this regime must be referred to the United Nations Security Council.
On Tuesday, 3 March 2026, in its 110th week, the ‘Tuesdays Against Execution’ campaign continues its hunger strike in the following 56 prisons:
