Breathing in Confinement – On the eve of the anniversary of the nationwide uprising of 2022, while the memory of Zhina (Mahsa) Amini and all those killed in that freedom-seeking movement remains alive in people’s hearts, the hunger strike campaign “Tuesdays Against Execution” has reached its 86th week and was held in 52 prisons across the country. The continuation of this protest is a clear response to the gross human rights violations and the wave of executions that the regime has pursued since the 2022 uprising. In the past three years, with thousands executed—including women and political prisoners—this campaign amplifies the voice of resistance against injustice and in defence of human dignity. It is a reminder that, despite brutal repression, the people of Iran continue to insist on their right to freedom and justice.

“The continuation of the ‘Tuesdays Against Execution’ campaign in its 86th week in 52 different prisons”

“With the anniversary of the 2022 nationwide protests, a day that shook the foundations of the regime of the Supreme Leader, we honour the memory of Zhina Amini and all those killed in that great and defining movement. An uprising that the authoritarian regime tried to suppress by firing bullets at young people and women and shooting protesters in the eyes—but resistance in the streets has continued.

The regime was so terrified of the uprising that it had no choice but to expose its inhuman nature. After the 2022 popular uprising, it drastically escalated executions and, since then, in just three years, has executed over 3,175 people, including 49 political and ideological prisoners and 95 women. In the past week alone, at least 34 prisoners were executed, and since the beginning of September, more than 126 have been hanged. These figures starkly illustrate the ongoing human catastrophe and human rights violations in Iran, and they heighten the responsibility of the international community and all freedom-seekers to support the struggle against these brutal executions.

We also commemorate wrestler Navid Afkari, who was executed on 12 September 2020, sacrificing his life in the struggle for freedom and justice. The sacrifices of those killed in the protests of January 2018, October 2019, and 2022 show that the Iranian people will never submit to repression and tyranny.

The ‘Tuesdays Against Execution’ campaign strongly condemns the death sentences issued against Pejman Toubareh-Rizi on the fabricated charge of ‘corruption on earth’ and Kurdish prisoner Naser Bokarzadeh on security-related charges, calling on all human rights activists and society at large to oppose these unlawful and unjust sentences.

As members of the ‘Tuesdays Against Execution’ campaign, we also express solidarity with the noble people and oppressed miners of Saqqez, and with the family of Mohammad Rashidi, who was killed last night by the regime’s repressive forces. We declare that until the complete abolition of the death penalty and the establishment of true justice in Iran, we will not relent. Each week, we will raise louder the voice of justice-seeking and the defence of human rights and dignity.

The ‘Tuesdays Against Execution’ campaign, Tuesday, 16 September 2025, in its 86th week, will continue with hunger strikes in the following 52 prisons:

Evin Prison, Ghezel Hesar Prison (Units 3 & 4), Karaj Central Prison, Fardis Prison, Greater Tehran Prison, Qarchak Prison, Khorrin Varamin Prison, Choobindar Qazvin Prison, Ahar Prison, Arak Prison, Langaroud Prison (Qom), Khorramabad Prison, Yasuj Prison, Asadabad Esfahan Prison, Dastgerd Esfahan Prison, Sheiban Ahvaz Prison, Sepidar Ahvaz Prison (men’s and women’s wards), Nezam Shiraz Prison, Adelabad Shiraz Prison (men’s and women’s wards), Firouzabad Fars Prison, Dehdasht Prison, Zahedan Prison (women’s ward), Borazjan Prison, Ramhormoz Prison, Behbahan Prison, Bam Prison, Yazd Prison, Kahnooj Prison, Tabas Prison, Mashhad Prison, Sabzevar Prison, Gonbad-e Kavus Prison, Qaemshahr Prison, Rasht Prison (men’s and women’s wards), Roudsar Prison, Haviq Talesh Prison, Azbarom Lahijan Prison, Dizelabad Kermanshah Prison, Ardabil Prison, Tabriz Prison, Urmia Prison, Salmas Prison, Khoy Prison, Naqadeh Prison, Miandoab Prison, Mahabad Prison, Boukan Prison, Saqqez Prison, Baneh Prison, Marivan Prison, Sanandaj Prison, and Kamyaran Prison.”
