Breathing in Confinement: Javad Alikordi, a lawyer currently imprisoned in Mashhad Prison, has been sentenced on charges of “assembly and collusion against national security” and “propaganda against the state” to a lengthy prison term, permanent disbarment from the legal profession, and internal exile.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Branch One of the Revolutionary Court in Mashhad has convicted Mr Javad Alikordi, a lawyer and the brother of the late lawyer Khosrow Alikordi, on charges related to offences against national security and imposed multiple punishments.

According to the report, Mr Alikordi was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment on the charge of “assembly and collusion with the intent to act against national security” and to thirteen years’ imprisonment on the charge of “propaganda against the state”. The court also imposed supplementary punishments, including permanent disbarment from the legal profession, a two-year ban on leaving the country, and two years of internal exile to the city of Saravan in Sistan and Baluchestan Province.

In total, he has been sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment. However, the manner in which the sentence will be enforced will be subject to the legal provisions governing multiple offences.

It is noteworthy that in December 2025, the body of his brother, Khosrow Alikordi, a lawyer and human rights advocate who represented political cases and the families of individuals killed during protests, was discovered under suspicious circumstances at his workplace in Mashhad.

Following the memorial ceremony marking the seventh day after Khosrow Alikordi’s death and the subsequent mass arrests of attendees, Javad Alikordi released a video warning about the continued detention of those arrested. He stated that unless the detainees were released, he would publish confidential documents and materials. Following these remarks, he was immediately arrested by security forces.

According to available information, Mr Alikordi had previously faced political and security-related charges in a separate case and had already received a sentence, part of which had been suspended.
