Breathing in Confinement: Maryam Babajani, one of those arrested during the popular protests in Izeh in January this year, has been sentenced by Branch One of the Revolutionary Court of Ahvaz to 32 years, 6 months, and 2 days of discretionary imprisonment.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the sentence was issued under the Law on Intensifying Punishment for Espionage Offences and is reportedly based on charges including “espionage” and “acting against national security.” Detailed information regarding the specific allegations and supporting evidence in the case has not been publicly disclosed.
Hossein-Ali Khatami, the defendant’s lawyer, has announced that he has objected to the verdict and submitted an appeal within the legal deadline. If accepted, the case will proceed to review before the Supreme Court.
Maryam Babajani was arrested in the city of Izeh in mid-January this year. After a period of detention, she was temporarily released pending the completion of judicial proceedings upon posting bail of 10 billion tomans.
The sentence has been issued amid numerous reports indicating an escalation of security and judicial measures against individuals detained during recent protests across different parts of the country.
