59 Political Prisoners on Hunger Strike at Karoon Prison in Ahvaz

Breathing in Confinement – 59 political prisoners held in Karoon prison, in Ahvaz, have gone on hunger strike to protest against the prison conditions.

According to the report of “Breathing in Confinement”; 59 political prisoners in ward 8 of Karoon prison, in Ahvaz, have gone on hunger strike asking since 21st December for improvement in prison conditions and demanding the condition of ill prisoners to be addressed by prison authorities.

An informed source in a conversation with “Breathing in Confinement’s” reporter, explained the prisoners demands as follows: “These prisoners are asking immediate medical treatment for ill prisoners including Jaber Sahravi, who has been affected by “M.S.” disease due to torture in detention of Ministry of Intelligence, and also, Kazem Khoshnamak, who suffers from arthritis.”

Regarding the prisoners’ other demands, he added: “These prisoners demand; better behavior by prison official staffs and army staffs towards the prisoners, improvement in contacting facilities between the prisoners and their families such as the time of their phone calls and visits, and facilities for study and education in prison.”

That is to say, political prisoners of Karoon prison, in Ahvaz, are allowed to have 3 times a week 3 minutes phone call and once a week a cabinet visit with their family members.

It is said that the time of visit is very short and it is intensively under control by the prison agents.

Remarkably, among the prisoners, Ali Saedi, has been sentenced to death on charge waging war against God.

Ali Saedi was arrested by the Intelligence office agents in Ahvaz in August 2007 and then was sentenced to two times death and 17-year imprisonment.
