Breathing in Confinement – The ninth chamber of the Supreme Court, presided over by Judge Mazinani, has rejected the second request for retrial of Babak Shahbazi.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Babak Shahbazi’s brother, Keyhan Shahbazi, stated that this was the second time the Supreme Court has denied a retrial. The family reported that his lawyer will soon submit a third request for retrial.

Babak Shahbazi was arrested in January 2024, later tried on the charge of “espionage for Israel,” and sentenced to death. His family has dismissed the accusations as baseless and lacking any credible evidence, pointing out that items such as “training in Microsoft Word” were cited as proof, which they say reflects the extreme weakness of the case. They also stressed that the death sentence was based on confessions extracted under pressure and torture from another individual, rendering it legally invalid.

Human rights activists and Shahbazi’s family have condemned the process as a violation of fair trial standards and fundamental human rights, calling for the halt of his execution.
