After completing his sentence, Payam Shakiba was released from Rajaee Shahr prison in Karaj

Breathing in Confinement: On Wednesday, December 7, 2022, Payam Shakiba, a political prisoner imprisoned in Rajaee Shahr prison in Karaj was released from prison after completing his sentence.

 

According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoner’s Rights League in Iran, today, Wednesday, December 7, 2022, Payam Shakiba completing his 13-month prison sentence, issued by Iman Afshari, the head of Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court was released from Rajaee Shahr prison in Karaj.

 

Mr Shakiba was previously sentenced to 13 months of imprisonment as well as 2 years of ban on leaving the country, 2 years of ban on membership in political and social groups as well as activities in social media by Branch 26 of Tehran Revolutionary Court headed by Judge Iman Afshari for the charge of “propaganda against the regime”. He as well was sentenced to confiscation of his mobile phones and laptops by the government.

 

Mr. Shakiba was notified of the judgment on September 23, 2021, but he appealed the verdict. So that the case should have been referred to the 36th branch of the Court of Appeal. However, he received a summons for the judgment enforcement without the Court of Appeal being held.

 

Payam Shakiba had been arrested by security forces in Tehran on June 14, 2021, and was transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence Detention Center in Ward 209 of Evin Prison to be interrogated. He was finally released on July 4, 2021 on 100 million Toman bail, awaiting the trial. Mr. Shakiba was summoned to Evin Court on August 21, 2021, to present his final defense.

 

Previously also, Payam Shakiba had been arrested by security forces on February 22, 2017. Later in December 2017, he was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court of Tehran to 11 years in prison on charges of “acting against national security through conspiracy and propaganda against the regime.” The verdict was later upheld by the Court of Appeals. While in prison, a new case was opened against him, and the intelligence service prevented his release. He however, was released from Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj on February 3, 2021, after being acquitted in the new case.

As a student at Zanjan University also, Payam Shakiba was arrested for 6 months for revealing the corruption of the educational deputy of university.
